Dermal fillers are used to treat wrinkles, volume loss and other signs of aging in specific areas of the face. Achieving a more youthful appearance with dermal fillers may also involve shaping and contouring the face to reduce sagging, particularly around the jaw and chin.
At Bloor Village Cosmetic Medicine in Toronto we offer some of the most popular hyaluronic acid and calcium based fillers available today, such as Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse®.
Dermal fillers can treat multiple areas including sagging and flat cheeks, deep wrinkles around the nose and mouth, flat and thin lips, sagging along the jaw, and much more. Lost volume in these areas of the face gives away our age and greatly affects the overall appearance of our face.
For youthful, natural-looking results, your consultation and dermal filler injection will be performed by Dr. Alves in the comfort of our brand new clinic, located in Toronto’s Bloor West Village. His experience and expertise ensure that every treatment is conducted safely and accurately, with minimal potential side effects.
We want to help you achieve your aesthetic goals so you can start feeling better about yourself!
Common Questions about Dermal Fillers
How do dermal fillers work?
Products such as Juvéderm® and Belotero® are formulated with hyaluronic acid, a natural occurring substance that stimulates the production of new fats and essential proteins in the skin. Radiesse® is a calcium based filler with collagen stimulating properties that works best for certain areas of the face. Dermal fillers penetrate the face’s tissue and target the sagging and deflated look that occurs as we age, promoting a healthier, more youthful appearance.
During the month following filler treatment the product will integrate with your own body’s collagen and tissues and form a beautiful, refreshed look in the areas injected*(see disclaimer).
How are dermal fillers administered?
All injectable hyaluronic acid and calcium based fillers are administered through either needle or cannula injection directly into the area of the face or body requiring volume and revitalizing. To make the procedure as painless as possible, areas such as the lips, cheeks, jawline are typically frozen (i.e. anesthetized) before injection, and Dr. Alves uses the thinnest needles possible.
How long does the procedure take?
Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse® treatments typically take only several minutes. Your appointment will be scheduled for upwards of 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on which areas will be treated and how much collagen and subcutaneous volume loss you have experienced. As with any medical procedure performed at Bloor Village Medical Cosmetics your safety and aesthetic outcome are our outmost concern, and so only Dr. Alves will perform your procedures. We do not allow nurse injectors to practice at our facility.
Dermal filler injections administered at our aesthetic medicine clinic rarely leave any indication they were performed and you may go about your day right away.
Who should not have dermal filler injections?
Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse® should not be used in pregnant or lactating women, as well as people who have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients. Anyone with a serious systemic disease, or on blood thinners, will need to consult with Dr. Alves to determine their ability to undergo treatment.
Can people tell I’ve had Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse®?
The treatment philosophy of Dr. Alves is that every patient should look like a refreshed, more youthful version of themselves, without people being able to exactly pinpoint why they look so good. We believe that nothing looks worse than when a patient looks swollen or as if they had an allergic reaction!
Are dermal fillers permanent?
No. Following injection, Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse® will be broken down by the body over several months. Most people can expect their treatment to last from 6+ months to up to 2+ years*(see disclaimer). Every person will break down the products over a varying amount of time depending on age, metabolism, activity level, the injected area and the amount of product used.
What happens to Juvéderm®, Belotero®, or Radiesse® once it is in my body?
The products will volumize the areas they are injected into and integrate with the body’s natural collagen and tissues. Over time the body will slowly break down the product naturally.
How much do dermal fillers cost?
The price of Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse® is calculated on a “per syringe” basis. This means that each individual will need a specific amount of product to achieve the cosmetic results they are looking for. Therefore, the cost of the dermal filler treatment varies by each patient depending on the areas, specific product, and amount needed.
What are the potential side effects of Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse®?
The vast majority of patients do not experience any side effects. Common and minor side effects include infection, local irritation, minor bruising at the injection sites, and headache. Rare side effects include skin necrosis, embolism, or serious allergic reaction. Dr. Alves undertakes a thorough discussion of side effects for all procedures.
Please feel free to discuss any and all concerns with him at the time of your medical consultation. During this appointment Dr. Alves will also help determine the best dermal filler for you based on your aesthetic goals and medical history.
