Common Questions about Botox® and Xeomin®

How does it work?

Botox® Cosmetic and Xeomin® both work by relaxing the muscles underneath the skin. This minimizes current wrinkles, and prevents the creation of further wrinkles, to create a smooth and refreshed appearance. This happens by blocking the muscle cells from receiving nerve cells’ messages to contract, and thus are known as neuromodulators.

How is it administered?

Botox® Cosmetic and Xeomin® are administered by injection using a very thin needle to avoid any pain, bruising or swelling. The Botox® Cosmetic or Xeomin® is injected directly into the muscle tissue and takes several days to take full effect. Maximal benefit is typically seen after two weeks*(see disclaimer).

These non-surgical wrinkle treatments are most commonly used to target muscles in the forehead, around the eyes and other areas of the face. But Botox® and Xeomin® injections have also proven effective in reducing wrinkles in the neck and upper chest, as well as treating excessively gummy smiles and controlling hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

How long does the procedure take?

Botox® Cosmetic and Xeomin® treatment typically takes only several minutes. Prior to treatment you will be invited to our Toronto clinic for a medical consultation with Dr. Alves, during which he can also answer any questions you might have. This will be scheduled for upwards of 30 minutes. Your appointment will be scheduled for upwards of 30 minutes for Dr. Alves’s consultation.

As with any medical procedure performed at Bloor Village Medical Cosmetics your safety and aesthetic outcome are our utmost concern, and so only Dr. Alves will perform your procedures. We do not allow nurse injectors to practice at our facility.

The procedure does not leave any indications that it was performed and you may go about your day right away.

Who should not have BOTOX® or XEOMIN®?

Botox® Cosmetic and Xeomin® should not be used in pregnant or lactating women, as well as people who have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients. Anyone with a serious neurological or immunological disease will need to consult with Dr. Alves to determine their ability to undergo treatment.

Can people tell I’ve had BOTOX® or XEOMIN®?

No one should be able to tell that you’ve had Botox® Cosmetic or Xeomin®, but they should notice that you look more refreshed, relaxed, and youthful.

botox-before-after_16
*see disclaimer

Is BOTOX® or XEOMIN® permanent?

Botox® Cosmetic and Xeomin® are not permanent. The muscles that were treated will lose their ability to contract and your frown lines will smoothen in several days. These muscles will be temporarily paralyzed for 12 to 16 weeks*(see disclaimer), after which they will slowly begin to work again. Each successive treatment will work longer than the last!

What happens to the BOTOX® and XEOMIN® once it is in my body?

Botox® Cosmetic/Xeomin® will stay within the muscles it was injected in. Over time the body will slowly break down the product and you will regain the function of the affected muscles.

How much does it cost?

The price of Botox® and Xeomin® are calculated on a “per unit” basis. This means that each individual will need a specific amount of product to achieve the results that they are looking for. Therefore, the cost of the treatment varies by each patient depending on the areas and amount of product needed.

What are the potential side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic® and XEOMIN®?

The vast majority of patients do not experience any side effects. Common and minor side effects include local irritation, minor bruising at the injection sites, and headache. Lip Augmentation with Dermal Fillers

The lips are the most neglected part of many anti-aging regimens, despite being a dead giveaway of how old or young a person is. But thanks to dermal fillers such as Juvéderm® and Belotero®, you can achieve fuller, more attractive lips without surgery.

As we age we dehydrate and lose the natural fat and collagen in our tissues that provide and create a look of fullness and youth. Collagen is the substance your body produces that creates fullness and volume in the tissues, including the lips. Over time our mouths lose volume, which leads to thinning of the lip and flattening of the cupid’s bow.

Wider, fuller lips are more attractive lips. At Bloor Village Cosmetic Medicine clinic in Toronto, Dr. Alves performs non-surgical lip augmentations with dermal fillers. In this treatment, ultra-fine needles are used to inject biodegradable fillers such as Juvéderm® and Belotero® into your lips for natural, long lasting, and beautiful results.

Dr. Alves is highly experienced and skilled in performing this procedure to artistically create volume, shape, symmetry and proportion in the lips.

Common Questions about Lip Injections

How does it work?

Juvéderm® and Belotero® dermal fillers help restore a youthful, plump appearance to lips by mimicking the fullness that the body’s natural collagen and elastin produce. The fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in skin, muscles, tendons, and other tissues of the body. Regular follow-up injections will keep your lips plump, smooth, and looking young.

lip-injection-before-after_19

How is it administered?

Very fine needles and/or cannulae (blunt tipped needles) are used to inject fillers: This provides minimal trauma to the tissues of the face. As such, dermal fillers do not require any down time from your life! You will be asked to avoid exercise, alcohol, or excessive heat or sun exposure the day of your treatment. You will also be instructed not to massage or rub your face for the day as your body will need to recover in the hours after being augmented.

How long does the treatment take?

Lip enhancement treatment with Juvéderm® and Belotero® is quick, typically taking about 30 minutes. Prior to your treatment a consultation will be scheduled at our clinic, located in Toronto’s Bloor West Village. Dr. Alves will ask you questions about your medical history, current medications, and any other relevant medical information.

Will I notice the difference right away?

Results are typically seen immediately and maximal benefits should be apparent by one week*(see disclaimer). Follow-up treatments can be undertaken for touch-ups and if you wish to have further lip enhancement, but this is not commonly necessary.

How long do the results last?

Both Juvéderm® and Belotero® lip augmentation treatments can be expected to last 9 to 18 months*(see disclaimer), with follow up recommended at one year. However, every patient’s results depend on their metabolism, activity level, lifestyle, and the amount of product injected.

How soon can I return to normal activities?

Some patients experience minor swelling, itching, slight pain or redness at the treatment site. These effects are short-lived and most people return to their daily activities without any downtime!

Who should not have dermal filler injections?

Juvéderm® and Belotero® should not be used in pregnant or lactating women, as well as people who have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients. Anyone with a serious systemic disease, or on blood thinners, will need to consult with Dr. Alves to determine their ability to undergo treatment.

Can people tell I’ve had Juvéderm® or Belotero®?

The treatment philosophy of Dr. Alves is that every patient should look like a refreshed, more youthful version of themselves, without people being able to exactly pinpoint why they look so good. We believe that nothing looks worse than when a patient looks swollen or as if they had an allergic reaction!

Are dermal fillers permanent?

No. After being injected into the lips, Juvéderm® and Belotero® will be broken down by the body over several months. Most people can expect their treatment to last from 6+ months to up to 2+ years*(see disclaimer). Every person will break down the products over a different amount of time depending on age, metabolism, activity level, the injected area and the amount of product used.

What happens to Juvéderm® and Belotero® once it is in my body?

The products will volumize the areas they are injected into and integrate with the body’s natural collagen and tissues. Over time the body will slowly break down the product naturally.

Dermal Fillers (Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse®)

Dermal fillers are used to treat wrinkles, volume loss and other signs of aging in specific areas of the face. Achieving a more youthful appearance with dermal fillers may also involve shaping and contouring the face to reduce sagging, particularly around the jaw and chin.

At Bloor Village Cosmetic Medicine we offer some of the most popular hyaluronic acid and calcium based fillers available today, such as Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse®.

dermal-fillers-before-after_13
*see disclaimer

Dermal fillers can treat multiple areas including sagging and flat cheeks, deep wrinkles around the nose and mouth, flat and thin lips, sagging along the jaw, and much more. Lost volume in these areas of the face gives away our age and greatly affects the overall appearance of our face.

For youthful, natural-looking results, your consultation and dermal filler injection will be performed by Dr. Alves in the comfort of our brand new clinic, located in Toronto’s Bloor West Village. His experience and expertise ensure that every treatment is conducted safely and accurately, with minimal potential side effects.

We want to help you achieve your aesthetic goals so you can start feeling better about yourself!

Common Questions about Dermal Fillers

How does it work?

Products such as Juvéderm® and Belotero® are formulated with hyaluronic acid, a natural occurring substance that stimulates the production of new fats and essential proteins in the skin. Radiesse® is a calcium based filler with collagen stimulating properties that works best for certain areas of the face. Dermal fillers penetrate the face’s tissue and target the sagging and deflated look that occurs as we age, promoting a healthier, more youthful appearance.

During the month following filler treatment the product will integrate with your own body’s collagen and tissues and form a beautiful, refreshed look in the areas injected*(see disclaimer).

How are dermal fillers administered?

All injectable hyaluronic acid and calcium based fillers are administered through either needle or cannula injection directly into the area of the face or body requiring volume and revitalizing. To make the procedure as painless as possible, areas such as the lips, cheeks, jawline are typically frozen (i.e. anesthetized) before injection, and Dr. Alves uses the thinnest needles possible.

How long does the procedure take?

Juvéderm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse® treatments typically take only several minutes. As with any medical procedure performed at Bloor Village Medical Cosmetics your safety and aesthetic outcome are our outmost concern, and so only Dr. Alves will perform your procedures. We do not allow nurse injectors to practice at our facility.

Dermal filler injections administered at our clinic rarely leave any indication they were performed and you may go about your day right away.

Non-Surgical Double Chin Removal with BELKYRA™/KYBELLA™

BELKYRA™ is a non-surgical double-chin fat removal treatment now offered by Dr. Alves at Bloor Village Cosmetic Medicine clinic!

This minimally invasive procedure is designed to dissolve fat and contour the chin for a more youthful, attractive appearance. Dr. Alves performs this treatment without surgery and without disruption to your daily life. BELKYRA™ (KYBELLA™ in the United States) is also known as non-surgical lipo.

belkyra-kybella-before-after_6
*see disclaimer

Common Questions about BELKYRA™/KYBELLA™

How does it work?

All of our body’s cells have a special outer layer of fat to control what goes in and out of them, known as a lipid membrane. BELKYRA™ is a medication that breaks down fat cells, and is actually the same type of chemical that our livers produce naturally and that gets released by our gall bladder to break down the food we eat. When fat cells are exposed to BELKYRA™ they are dissolved.

How is BELKYRA™ administered?

BELKYRA™ is injected with a very thin needle into the fat that creates the double chin. Medically, this area is known as submental pre-platysmal fat.

After 4-6 weeks you will have a follow up consultation with Dr. Alves to assess the initial treatment’s level of fat loss. Most patients require 2-4 treatments for optimal results*(see disclaimer), but individual goals will be discussed with Dr. Alves.

How long does the procedure take?

BELKYRA™ double-chin removal treatment typically takes only several minutes. Your consultation with Dr. Alves will be scheduled for up to 45 minutes at our clinic, located in the Bloor West Village of Toronto. As with any medical procedure performed at Bloor Village Medical Cosmetics, your safety and aesthetic outcome are our utmost concern, and so only Dr. Alves will perform your non-surgical lipo procedure. We do not allow nurse injectors to practice at our facility.

The procedure does not leave any indication that it was performed and you may go about your day right away.

Who should not have BELKYRA™?

BELKYRA™ should not be used in pregnant or lactating women, as well as people who have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients. People with blood, neurological, or immune system disorders must discuss whether they are able to undergone treatment with Dr. Alves.

Can people tell I’ve had BELKYRA™?

The procedure is minimally invasive and most people can leave the office and go about their day without anyone noticing they were treated. The area injected will swell and may bruise slightly. This typically lasts for one week. Over the next 2-6 weeks the fat cells under the chin will be broken down by the body, resulting in a more sculpted and shapely jaw, chin, and neck*(see disclaimer).

belkyra-double-chin-removal-before-after-1
*see disclaimer

What does BELKYRA™ do?

When our weight fluctuates with diet and exercise our fat cells shrink when we are burning more calories than we eat, or grow when we eat more than we burn. In contrast, BELKYRA™ dissolves these fat cells, so they can no longer store excess fat.

What happens to the BELKYRA™ once it is in my body?

BELKYRA™ is a similar molecule to one that our liver creates and gallbladder excretes when we eat fatty foods (deoxycholic acid). After it is injected BELKYRA™ also gets stored in the gallbladder and is used to help digest food like its natural counterpart.

How much does it cost?

The price of BELKYRA™ varies from person to person depending on how much treatment they need to remove their double chin fat. This means that each individual will need a specific amount of product to achieve the cosmetic results they are looking for. Therefore, the cost of the BELKYRA™ treatment varies by each patient depending on the amount of product and treatments needed.

What are the potential side effects of BELKYRA™?

The vast majority of patients do not experience any side effects from BELKYRA™ injections. Rarer and more serious side effects can include nerve and skin damage.

How long do the results last?

Your eyelashes and eyebrows will continue to grow fuller and thicker as long as you are using Latisse®. Once you discontinue treatments your eyelashes will return to their pre-treated state over several weeks to months*(see disclaimer).

Once your lashes have become fuller, longer, and darker, you may not need to use Latisse® every month, and may be able to adjust the number of treatments. Dr. Alves will provide appropriate follow-up and treatment recommendations after your initial treatments.

How soon can I return to normal activities?

There are no restrictions to your daily activities when using Latisse®. It is recommended that all patients apply the product to their eyebrows and eyelashes during a night when they will not be exercising or going out to make sure they do not have a skin reaction.

BOTOX® for Excess Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Many people suffer from excessive sweating in their underarms (axillae), hands, and feet. When this begins to cause social anxiety and avoidance of situations likely to cause excessive sweating, such as public speaking and social gatherings, this is known as hyperhidrosis.

Many treatments include powders, prescription deodorants, and other topical treatments that act to hide or cover up the excess sweat. But these don’t address the problem directly. The best way to stop excess sweating in your hands, feet, and underarms is with BOTOX®.

BOTOX® is a class of drugs known as neuromodulators. They function to block the body’s sweat glands so that there is no sweat being produced to begin with!

botox to control excess sweating

Common Questions about BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis

How is it administered?

Botox® is administered by injection using a very thin needle to avoid any pain, bruising or swelling. The Botox® is injected directly into the areas of excessive sweat and takes several days to take full effect. Maximal benefit is seen after two weeks*(see disclaimer).

How long does the procedure take?

Botox® treatment to control excessive sweating typically takes only several minutes. Your appointment will be scheduled for upwards of 30 minutes for Dr. Alves’ consultation. As with any medical procedure performed at Bloor Village Medical Cosmetics your safety and aesthetic outcome are our outmost concern, and so only Dr. Alves will perform your procedures. We do not allow nurse injectors to practice at our facility.

The procedure does not leave any indication that it was performed and you may go about your day right away.

Who should not have BOTOX® for excessive sweating?

Botox® should not be used in pregnant or lactating women, as well as people who have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients. Anyone with a serious neurological or immunological disease will need to consult with Dr. Alves to determine their ability to undergo treatment.

Is BOTOX® permanent?

Botox® is not permanent. The sweat glands that were treated will lose their ability to produce sweat over several days. These glands will be temporarily unable to sweat for 12 to 16 weeks, after which they will slowly begin to work again. Each successive treatment will work longer than the last*(see disclaimer).

What happens to the BOTOX® once it is in my body?

Botox® Cosmetic will stay within the muscles it was injected in. Over time the body will slowly break down the product and you will regain the function of the blocked sweat glands.

How much does it cost?

The treatment of hyperhidrosis is partially covered by OHIP. Many insurance companies will cover the remaining treatment cost for hyperhidrosis. For further information related to cost and insurance coverage, please call our office directly at 647-237-7516.

What are the potential side effects of BOTOX®?

The vast majority of patients do not experience any side effects. Common and minor side effects include local irritation, minor bruising at the injection sites, and headache. Rare but temporary side effects include short-term paralysis of unintended muscles or serious allergic reaction. Dr. Alves undertakes a thorough discussion of side effects for all procedures. Hand Rejuvenation with Radiesse®

Your hands don’t lie. Even with a more youthful-looking face, your age can easily be given away by the appearance of your hands.

Thin skin at the back of the hand shows signs of ageing faster than most other areas of the body. This volume loss shows the bones and tendons of the hand, a dead giveaway of your age.

RADIESSE® is the first and only FDA-approved product for hand augmentation to correct volume loss in the hands. RADIESSE® restores volume to the hands while providing smooth, natural-looking results that can be seen immediately and can last over one year*(see disclaimer).

At Bloor Village Cosmetic Medicine clinic you will receive individualized and specific treatment for natural-looking hand rejuvenation. Dr. Alves’s expertise and experience will ensure your treatment will be performed safely and accurately, while minimizing potential side effects.

We’re excited to help you achieve your aesthetic goals so you can feel better about yourself!

Common Questions about RADIESSE®

How does it work?

RADIESSE® works by recreating the natural fullness underneath the skin that is lost as we age. It also stimulates the body’s natural collagen production to further hide the look of tendons and bones that become apparent with aged and dehydrated skin. This works to create a smooth and refreshed appearance.

How is RADIESSE® administered?

RADIESSE® is administered using a very thin needle to avoid any pain, bruising or swelling. The RADIESSE® is injected directly underneath the skin of the hand and should have an immediate effect in hiding the appearance of aged hands. Over the next weeks to months there will be further fullness as the body is stimulated to recreate the natural collagen that gives our body tissues fullness, volume, and a youthful appearance*(see disclaimer).

How long does the procedure take?

RADIESSE® hand rejuvenation treatment typically takes only several minutes.

The procedure does not leave any indication that it was performed and you may go about your day right away with any restrictions!

radiesse hand rejuvenation before and after

Who should not have RADIESSE®?

RADIESSE® should not be used in pregnant or lactating women, as well as people who have had a previous allergic reaction to the drug or any of its ingredients.

Can people tell I’ve had RADIESSE®?

No one should be able to tell that you’ve had RADIESSE® hand rejuvenation treatments, but they should notice that you look more refreshed, relaxed, and youthful.

Is RADIESSE® permanent?

RADIESSE® is not permanent. The body will slowly absorb and break down RADIESSE ® over the course of 1-2 years, providing long-lasting effects due to the stimulation of your body’s natural collagen as well as the volumizing properties of the product itself*(see disclaimer).

What happens to the RADIESSE® once it is in my body?

RADIESSE® will stay within the layers of tissues it was injected in. Over time the body will slowly break down the product and you will require additional treatments to recreate the youthful effect.

How much does it cost?

The price of RADIESSE® is calculated on a “per syringe” basis. This means that each individual will need a specific amount of product to achieve the results that they are looking for. Therefore, the cost of the treatment varies by each patient depending on the areas and amount of product needed.

What are the potential side effects of RADIESSE®?

The vast majority of patients do not experience any side effects. Rare and temporary side effects include pain, and minor bruising. Dr. Alves undertakes a thorough discussion of side effects for all procedures. Please feel free to discuss any and all concerns with him at the time of your free consultation.
